SEO Tips: Increase Page Rank By Revitalizing Your Old Posts

A little publicized SEO factor with Google’s PageRank is the issue of updating old posts.

A webmaster/blogger who pays attention to their blog content, updating and fixing old posts, is one who cares about their blog and their blog’s content. Google’s PageRank algorithm tests to see how often a web page is updated and the length of time between changes in a blog post’s content.

It makes sense, too. If you work hard to bring the best content to your readers, then you would want to make sure that the old content continues to have life and vitality. Google wants to honor those who honor their blog content.

Here are some tips to help revitalize your old posts for your readers, as well as to help your search engine page ranking.

  • Link to Old Posts: Want to revitalize an old blog post easily? Just link to it. A new incoming link drives traffic to it, as well as search engines.
  • Add Intrasite Links: Go through your old posts and look for opportunities to link from within the post to other related posts you’ve written more recently.
  • Write It Better With Keywords: Now that you understand the importance keywords and search terms play in helping your blog content get found on search engines, go back and rewrite the content with more and better keywords.
  • Rewrite and Update Information and Blog About It: Posts which are popular or have timely information worthy of updating, can be updated and fixed, then bragged about. If you make big improvements, point to them in a new blog post to let people know you are working on old material to make it better. It also helps to drive traffic and call attention to the wealth of information your blog contains, not just today’s news.
  • Rewrite From a New Perspective: As you improve your blogging skills, learning more all the time, you may want to revisit your old posts and rewrite them with a fresh perspective.
  • A Revitalized Post Can Become The New Popular Post: After you’ve been blogging a while, you learn what turns a blah post into a snappy post. Editing, rewriting, or updating a post can not just add more search terms and keywords, it might turn the spotlight on the re-energized post to become a Most Popular Post.
  • Add a List: Instead of writing paragraph, paragraph, paragraph, try changing the content into a list form, guiding the reader through the process rather than just telling them about it. Lists and instructions are very popular compared to story-telling guides.
  • Spell Check: Spelling errors seem to appear like weeds. I swear I proof and check thoroughly everything I publish, but something always seems to peek out from the flowers months later. Go through and fix those spelling weeds, checking for “from” and “form” and other non-spell checking common mistakes. And while you are at it, change wrodpress to WordPress and plug-in to Plugin so people searching for your topics on these will find them.
  • Update Links: An external referring link isn’t permanent. Links destinations change all the time. Some webmasters are smart and add redirects, but not all are, so update your old posts by checking for outdated and dead end links and removing the truly dead ones and updating the moved links.
  • Revisit the Topic: Clean up the old post and then revisit the topic in a new post, referencing the old post. It’s a chance to say all the things you didn’t say the first time, adding more to the story, and a chance to add a spark of attention to the old post.
  • Incorporate the Old Post Into a Series: When you’ve been blogging a while, you find yourself returning frequently to a subject theme. If you find you have a related collection of blog posts, edit them to become an article series, connected together as a small body of work instead of sitting alone individually.
  • Create Your Own Top 10 List: Write a blog post featuring your top 10, 25, or 50 blog posts, honoring them as your favorites, most popular subject matter, or most popular for the year or month, creating a list directing readers to the old posts.
  • Use Related Posts: Through a Related Posts WordPress Plugin or manually, add a list of related posts to the bottom of your blog posts, pointing readers to your old posts for more information and reference.
  • Change The Title: If the post content is good but the title stinks, not attracting the attention you think it should, change it. You need to make another decision on whether or not to change the post slug, the URL permalink of the post, to match the new title. Few change the post slug, but do change the post title to make it really describe what the post is about and it may start attracting more traffic.
  • Find a Way to Create Interest and Enthusiasm on the Subject: Whether the information is a little old or not, find a way to energize the information to create renewed interest in the subject. Not just through the editing process, but blog about it and the lessons you learned, referring back to the new edited version.
  • It’s soooo old…: There are times when the information within an old post is soooo old, there is really no fixing it. It just has no value. Some choose to delete these for a variety of reasons. You can also keep it, but add a note that explains that this information is no longer valid, and points them in the direction of newer information, revitalizing a more recent post.

Even changing and updating a link shows a search engine you’re paying attention to your old posts. A little more care, cleaning, and maintenance may speak even more about the care you have for your entire blog, increasing your page ranking.

Don’t let the dust pile up on your old posts. Give them a good dusting and shine some light on them. They are still worthy, right? Make sure they continue to represent your blog well.

Google PageRank Algorithm & Tips to Increase PageRank

Google PageRank is a numeric value that shows how important a page is on the web. PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors, which determines a page's ranking in the search results. In other words, PageRank is a "vote", by all the other pages on the Web, about how important a page is. A link to a page counts as a vote of support. If there's no link, there's no support. Thus, Google calculates a page's importance from the number of votes cast for it. Each vote is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.

Method to calculate Google PageRank:

While calculating Google PageRank for a web page, all of its inbound links are taken into account. These are links from within the site (Internal Links) and links from outside the site (External Links). PageRank can be calculated using a simple iterative algorithm. PageRank algorithm is in fact elegantly simple and is calculated as follows:
PR (A) = (1-d) + d (PR (T1)/C (T1) + ... + PR (Tn)/C (Tn))
where

  • PR (A) is the PageRank of page A,
  • PR (Ti) is the PageRank of pages Ti which link to page A,
  • C (Ti) is the number of outbound links on page Ti and
  • d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1
Importance of Google PageRank:

PageRank helps Google's crawl to give preference to the web page, which has got good PR ranking. In fact, PageRank drives Google's monthly crawl, so that sites with higher PageRank get crawled earlier, faster, and deeper than sites with low PageRank. For a large site with an average-to-low PageRank, this is a major obstacle. If your pages don't get crawled, they won't get indexed. If they don't get indexed in Google, people won't know about them. In short, PageRank is the soul and essence of Google, on both the all-important crawl and the all-important rankings.

Tips to Increase PageRank:

  • PageRank (PR) is related to link popularity (i.e. other sites linking to yours), however it depends more on the quality of these links than merely the number. If you want to increase PageRank, concentrate on building link popularity.
  • Google PageRank depends on internal and external links. Look at its algorithim, and you can see both inbound and oubound links are taken. Thus, you may want to increase PageRank by enhancing the number of inbound and oubound links.
  • To increase the chance of getting healthy PageRanks for pages beneath the home page, make sure your site is linked together healthily. Link all secondary pages to the home page and to each other.
  • If you have several articles, in different directories on a similar subject, link these together too to increase PageRank - Google will see them as relevant and rank accordingly.
  • It is essential to exchange links with sites with a PageRank of 4 or more to increase your site's PageRank. Sites of all PR's are worthwhile and should be contacted, but those with 4+ will have a direct impact on your page ranking. If these sites have a subject relevant to your own, it will be even better.
  • If you have good quality content, good layout and good design, you will have a far better chance of building reciprocal links to sites in the subject area related to yours. The content-rich sites over the past few years usually have a PageRank of 6 or more, due to their quality content and good links with other companies in a similar area of business.

5 Steps to Increase your Google Page Rank.

Google Page rank is based on back links. Back links are Links pointing to your website from another website. The more back links you have the higher your PR will be.

1. Join forums, forums are a great way to achieve links to your website. In most forums you are allowed to have a signature and in your signature you can put a link to your website. But another important note to look on is making sure the forum is somewhat related to your website. You will still get credit if it's not, but if it's related to your website than you will be accomplishing two tasks at once.

You will be advertising for your website (bringing in targeted traffic) You will also be building your websites presence.

Your websites presence is very important to your survival. The more people see, or hear about your website the more credibility you will have and this increases your chances of having these visitors come back and possibly become leads.

2. Submit to search engine directories. Search engine directories are a good way to get a free link to your website. They also increase your chances at being listed higher on popular search engines like Google, and overture.

Most search engine directories allow you to submit to their website for free. This will allow you to increase your web presence by being listed on another search engine, and it will also be a free link.

Remember the more links you have the higher your PR will be

3. Using ezine ads (or newsletters). Creating an ezine will probably be the most beneficial step you can take to increasing your web presence. When you create an ezine you will be able to keep visitors coming back to your website for more by using signatures and giving special deals.

Ezine's will also allow you to increase your back links. By creating an ezine you can submit your information about your ezine to an ezine directory. This directory will than link to your website(thus giving you a free link).

4. Creating and publishing articles. Articles are an easy source of generating new traffic. You can include your signature in your article. This will bring in more traffic from article submission directories.

Your signature usually consists of 4 to 8 lines. Usually the first line would be the title of the website that you are trying to advertise. The last line would be the link to the website and the lines in between these would be a sales pitch to draw your viewers into your website.

5. Links from related websites. Gaining links from related websites can be one of the most frustrating tasks you can attempt.

They are very easy to find, but can be somewhat difficult to obtain links from.

To find related websites, all you have to do is go to a search engine... say Google... and type in your subject. Maybe your website is based on ford mustangs.

You go to Google and type in ford mustangs, than you look around for pages that are somewhat related to your website. After you have done this (which should be very easy) you have to contact them in some way to get your link posted on their website. This can be the most difficult task because a lot of webmasters ignore e-mail's from people requesting links because they don't see the importance of it at the time. Some other reasons could be that they are rarely online, or they delete spam mail and sometimes delete their important emails in the process.

Important note: When looking for link partners don't just link with websites that have a page rank of 4 or higher. Link with anyone and everyone you get a chance to. If you link to someone that has a page rank of zero, this will not hurt your page rank. It will only increase it because you are getting a link back to your website. Google doesn't look at your back links page ranks to determine what yours is going to be. It simply looks at how many back links you have.

So if Google one day decided to link to a website that was just created and this website has a page rank of 0 and has a domain that goes something like this: mywebsite.geocities.com it's page rank wouldn't increase even though Google's page rank is 10, it's rank would still be zero because it would only have that one back link.

Hmm…Build Google PageRank to Increase Rankings!

While surfing around the various websites, I happened to visit TopSEOs.com which keeps track of the Top SEO companies around the world. I was going through those Top SEO companies when I stuck to this page on IncreaseVisibility.com, which clearly says

“Build PR or Page Rank on Google which moves your site higher in the rankings”.

I would like to ask you, when did PageRank had to do with rankings. I mean come on, you are the Top SEO company ranked by the people who keep a keen eye upon various SEO companies, and you are talking about building PageRank, which has no importance to rankings.

We all know PageRank Died long time ago, and has nothing to do with rankings. There are so many examples of sites that have low PR and rank for the toughest keywords. For examples Phoenix Realm.com a PR3 site ranks #10 for “seo blog”, SEO MegaCorp a PR2 site ranks #16 for “seo company”, Courtney Turtle a PR4 site ranks #10 for “internet marketing”. These are just to show you all that PR is not important for rankings. It’s anchor text links from good quality sites, which are important for ranking top on search engines, but be sure to vary the anchor text you use. Google loves naturally grown links, if you vary your anchor text links it will look natural.

Example of an Anchor text?
< href="http://real-traffic.blogspot.com">Shweta Agnihotri< /a>
Here Shweta Agnihotri, is the anchor text. (The white space is to show the code.)

Moral of the Post:
PR is dead, Quality anchor text link lives!

How To Make A Killer Title For Digg!

What does your title say to your reader is the very first thing that brings them to read it further. There are zillions of web pages out there, so do you think that they will read it just because you wrote it, unless you’re Mukesh Ambani or people of that category!

The very first step you must put in is to decide a “killer” title. That blows out, other’s! I was looking to the stories that hit front page of digg, and found one thing in common, an outstanding title. Top diggers know it very well, they can catch you attention even when you are looking through the upcoming stories section.

I had a privilege to talk to one of the social media mavens and an active digger, Tal Siach, who told me that title were one of the most important things for any story to get noticed and to hit the front page (of course the content needs to be good as well) .He also listed a few examples of stories and their titles that hit front page often.

1. Lists do Wonders: Top 10 Reasons, 5 Simple Ways. These kinds of lists do wonders and are the most favorite among the diggers and hit the front page often. You must use numbers, this helps in catching the attention of the voter.
2. How Tos/Why does: How to Make a Rocket. These are the second type of stories that hit the front page often.
3. Political Issues: Jon Stewart reacts to press coverage of Hillary crying. This is yet again a kind of title that catches your attention.4. Hot News: Snow Falls in Baghdad For First Time in 100 Years. You see how does the digger has used the numbers in this eye catchy title.
5. Business Deals: Starbuck Vs MacDonalds. These kind of stories are also very eye catchy.
6. Science-Fiction: UFOs Sited Over San Diego on New Years Eve. Got the attention, got the vote!
7. Best of Stuffs: Best of Adobe Photoshop Tutorials. Again a type of story that get hit.
8. Microsoft and Bill Gates: Why Microsoft Must Control One Laptop Per Child. It seems that any story of Microsoft hit to front page.
9. Apple and Steve Jobs: Same with Apple.10. Digg and Kevin Rose: And same with Digg. Well diggers just love to read good things about digg.As you could see from the examples, they have one thing in common. They have a unique and attractive “title”. So you must write a killer title to blow your competition away!
