Clicking on a website link is not enough to keep businesses going, or make them any money if you are hoping to gain most of your success from the number of hits you get. It is mind boggling how fast times have changed since the birth of the internet, making money online from your own website was simple and uncomplicated. However, if you are looking to make a successful business from owning a few websites then you should (if not already) be familiar with the three magical words - search engine optimisation.
Search engine optimisation was a term used during the early 1990s, whereby webmasters first became familiar with the importance of page rankings in search engines. For this reason keyword search terms were identified and were used as a tool to raise page rankings, thus as time went by competition became fierce and search engine rankings became a serious business. The simple route of adding in as many keywords into content to improve rankings was abandoned, with organic SEO being promoted as a successful way of working towards high rankings.
Since the birth of search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN, websites have found themselves facing the difficulties of maintaining and trying to gain high rankings for some of the more popular terms. From a business point of view, this is imperative to gaining public recognition and bringing in the potential clients, helping it to become a successful business. Search engine optimisation and marketing have been just of one of the methods of raising business profiles through their websites.
However, this is not as simple is putting in a few keywords and getting high rankings. Nor do any of the search engines, especially Google care about fancy images or flash graphics. The key elements to good SEO are good quality content to the website that uses relevant keywords, without over-doing it and making your site search engine friendly (in other words keeping your URLs simple and question mark free!).
One big mistake people make is assuming that their websites will shoot up to the first page of all the search engines and then are bitterly disappointed when they realise that this takes a lot longer than they had originally anticipated. The one thing you should never do is ignore the key terminology used for SEO purposes, the ideal step to take is to research this and read up forums gaining useful tips and advice as much as you can.
This will test your patience and you will have to learn that this takes time; however, it will eventually pay-off. For beginners and newbie's, the first thing you will need to research is the very basic steps to high ranking and search engine optimisation. Quite simply this is a process of improving the level of traffic you gain on your website. Along the way you will learn more about organic SEO, which is a term, used for gaining natural search engine results through proper use of the keyword terminologies and staying compliant to search engine requirements.
The next thing you will need to do is to add some good quality content to your site. Think about how you surf the internet in your free time, you may have come across websites that are all images and no text, in which case you would not necessarily continue looking through it. This is where content is vital, not just any content but informative and descriptive content that use a sensible number of keywords in the text.
This is where search engines will gain most of the information from, download the page and add this onto their server - the process is known as 'crawling'. It is important that you find out as much information about this as you can, so as not to be left behind or find yourself falling low in the ranks. You must remember that other sites are working to gain page one rankings, so you will need to work hard to shine out above them.
